The Sacred Sap

The Sacred Sap is a work of hypertext fiction, crafted using Twine and enriched with HTML and CSS, that explores the profound and symbiotic relationship between humanity and nature. Set against the backdrop of ancient India, the narrative unfolds within the sacred heart of a forest inhabited by an indigenous tribal community. At the center of this tale is Harini, a deeply layered character whose life is portrayed through important incidents in her life, each a glimpse into the evolution of her spirit. As a young girl, she is timid yet inwardly courageous; as a woman, she matures into a fearless guardian, rising to protect her people and their ancestral land; and finally, as a mother, she becomes a nurturing warrior, embodying both fierce protection and tender love toward her child and her community. What pours life into The Sacred Sap is its narrator: Mahua, an ancient, sentient tree who has silently witnessed generations of human lives intertwine with the forest’s own rhythms. Through Mahua’s eyes, rooted in the soil yet reaching to the heavens, the story is told with wisdom, sorrow, and timeless grace, grounding the reader in a narrative that is both mythical and deeply human. This hypertext tale is not merely read-it is navigated, inviting the reader to journey through the tangled paths of Harini’s life, each choice and branch revealing the delicate balance between survival, sacrifice, and sacred connection to the natural world.
